Michelle Standley, PhD

Before pursuing a career as a freelance editor, writer, and translator, I was an Associate Professor (Adjunct) of History in the Department of Social Science and Cultural Studies at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn. While pursuing my doctoral degree in history from New York University, I also taught at Cooper Union, Hunter College, the University of Georgia, Seattle University, and the Museum of the City of New York. Over the course of my decade as a university instructor, I worked to find ways to integrate teaching writing, research, and critical-thinking skills into my history lectures. At Pratt, I helped create a writing curriculum for our department, later adopted by the college, for which I received a Mellon grant. I also led workshops for faculty on teaching writing and for graduate students on public speaking. Seven years ago I made the leap from teaching undergraduates to helping advanced students, scholars, and writers, especially non-native English speakers, refine their English-language communication skills.

I grew up in the desert outside of Los Angeles; spent several years moving around (Hawaii, Seattle, Seoul, Prague, Berlin), until moving to New York to attend graduate school and then work as a university lecturer after graduation. I arrived in Berlin for the first time in the summer of 1999 & immediately felt at home. Since then, I’ve been shuttling back & forth between NY (where my son lives) & Berlin (where my partner does).

I HEART NY
